Umm, not so much. The hummos is my Lebanese yardstick and they did not measure up. Bland and small portion too. Pita was woefully avg too, a bit sweet and not inviting. Sandwich was decent but they lost me w the hummos. Maybe it's good for Charleston but I won't return.

I took my dad here when he came to visit Charleston. He is Egyptian and loved the food! He was so happy with the Lentil Soup and mint tea. You can tell the the grapeleaves are made in house which is fantastic and very hard to find. Friends don't let friends eat canned grapeleaves.

Molly B and I came in after an long work session at Starbucks next door and we were both starving. After 9pm there aren't many options so we decided to give Ali Baba a try. We were the only guests at 9pm on a Thursday night, but that's not too surprising. The atmosphere felt very authentic, but could use a little update. We got an order of Hummus and a couple shawarma sandwiches. The hummus was great and the pita was warm and super fresh. Surprising that the hummus is only a dollar less than the sandwich but it was worth it. The shawarma sandwich was excellent! The meat was full of flavor and the sandwich bread was stuffed with it along with the toppings. Add the sauces to your liking and you won't be disappointed. Seven bucks for that sandwich is more than worth it.

I hate the fact that I am giving this place 3 stars... I so badly wanted it to be a 5 star experience!! My chicken was burnt and a bit tough. The greek salad was swimming in dressing. My boyfriends shawirma was decent, I would say it was a 4 star dish. He really liked the hummus served with it. The kibby was the only 5 star worth item. I definitely recommend getting the kibby plate, or at least some kibby on the side. For what I was served, I felt this place was a bit expensive as well. Looking forward to giving Ali Baba another shot to impress me!

Highly recommended--I very much like the various falafel sandwiches including the Ali Baba falafel which includes sauteed eggplant, cauliflower, and potatoes along with the falafel balls. Very nice Jerusalem salad which is part of the sandwich. The lentil soup is tasty-- hearty, but not spicy. Pleasant and efficient staff seems to get the food to tables in a hurry, without sacrificing the quality.

This place had great food. I had the Köfte kebab Sandwich and it was excellent. Having spent about a month in Turkey, I know what good mediterranean tastes like. Based upon their menu, this place is the real deal. Lots of traditional mediterranean options. In a bizarre way, you feel like you're in the mediterranean while dining here (lots of tacky decorations, plastic covered tables, etc.). With that being said, the interior needs an update. Great spot though...I look forward to trying the other items on the menu.

I love the kalaya!! So tasty! Excellent! The shish tawook and mojadara are both dishes that I have eaten and enjoyed!

I just ate here two nights in a row, and I have to say this place is LEGIT. The staff is very friendly, attentive and the food comes out very timely. Some of the shining stars on the menu are the hummus, which is creamy and good with everything! Especially the warm pita that comes to your table with tahini and hot sauce. I am a big big fan of their rice. Although it doesn't look like anything special on the outside, this rice is so aromatic and flavorful! With a combination of various spices used in a subtle way provides many layers of flavor infused in the rice that makes it so addicting. The tabbouleh is perfectly seasoned with just the right ratios of lemon, parsley, and other goodness that makes up this light delicious salad. The falafel is fried to perfection. Crispy, golden on the outside, and fluffy on the inside. The Kalaya dish is also a must try! It's an amazing tomato stew with a mixture of beef and lamb and all kinds of spices on a plate served with that amazing rice. It's something that I will be dreaming about. My husband loves the stuffed zucchini which is a cored out zucchini stuffed with a rice, beef mixture, then baked with their delicious tomato sauce. I only had a bite and instantly wished I had my own. For dessert I tried their baklava which is the best that I've ever had! It's not too sweet, very flaky, and just so good that you won't even remember that your already stuffed! Although I do not care for the plastic table cloths, clashing decor, or the picture book menu, the chef really knows what he's doing. All the food is made with such care, and so much flavor! The prices are also quite reasonable. I also hope that in the future there will be more variety, or specials. I will definitely be back again and again!

... Visited on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't very busy. I had a vegetarian combo which consisted of falafels, hummus, pocket bread and a vegetable/salad mix (can't remember what this portion was named). The food was fast, but there wasn't anyone else in the restaurant. Everything that I had was good. Basic decor, but clean and decent. I only came to eat anyway so who cares?! No complaints.

I am big middle eastern fan. This is one of the best places. They look simple, but have some great food. It's away from downtown Charleston though- like 5, 10 minutes but worth the try. Anytime

I've been getting take out from here for sometime now. And being a big meat eater, I would have never ever guessed how fantastic ground garbanzo beans and spices, deep fried could truly be. I am a big fan of the Falafel here. And their Tahini sauce is practically drinkable it's so good. The annoying thing I can say about this place is that if you order a dinner plate, they are pretty skimpy on the meat. Also, if you want extra Tahini sauce, they charge you a dollar for this little tiny cup of it. Annoying.

I reviewed many restaurants in Charleston prior to visiting for the first time, but I didn't plan anything for lunch on the day we arrived because I wasn't sure how long it would take to get baggage, pick up rental, and misc. errands. We were both starving at 3:30 pm and ready to settle for just about anything and by "anything" I mean anything other than fast food. We had do pick up some things at Harris Teeter and I saw this place so we decided to give it a try. A very nice waiter welcomed us and seated us right away. It's possible that the wait time is usually longer, but at the time we visited just one table was occupied. The restaurant is pretty casual and you can also order takeout from the counter. I ordered a chicken shawarma, which came out within 7-10 minutes and it was great; the pita bread was soft and fresh, the chicken was flavorful and juicy, and the veggies inside were flavored perfectly. They put just the right amount of sauce in the sandwich, and provide extra tahini and hot sauce on the side as well. I ended my meal with an incredibly delicious cup of coffee and paid just $17.48, plus tip for two. If I lived in Charleston, I'd definitely be a regular here.

Best falafel sandwich I've had. They put some fried cauliflower and pickles in too. Baba is okay but hummus was super light and creamy. Falafels are so light and airy, I would say they came from heaven. Good stuff.

My wife and I really enjoy the food here. If you go, try the Burma dessert. Artful and delicious!

  • Kelsey F.

We LOVE the food here. The falafel is def the best in town. We like to order the salad plate with Jerusalem salad and tabouli and the appetizer plate and make our own falafel pita pockets. The spicy and tahini sauces are delish and don't forget to order Burma - a delicious pistachio dessert. Wish the atmosphere were a little more comfortable, hence the 4 stars instead of 5. We did sit outdoors with our dog at one of the two outside tables last time.

The reason why I had to give three stars was for the service - After we finished eating and asked for our checks, the waiter asked us if we're on the same or separate check. When we told him that we're on a separate check, he asked who ordered what. This was when I became livid. We ordered so much food that it would be too much of a hassle to tell him exactly what we ordered. So, we told him to split the checks evenly, but I was not happy with this because my friend ordered more than I do. Come on, put more effort into your work and actually write down our orders in the beginning. Other than that, the food was absolutely delicious! I highly recommend the Shawirma Combination Plate and the Falafel. Avoid the coffee.

  • Sarah M.

I actually loved their food (except for the tabbouleh salad and the fact that the meet was cold when served!) Service is very nice but the ambience of this place is not the best for a dinner. You should go there for lunch. Their kibby and falafel are very good! Portions (including combination platters) are rather small!!

Fabulous fine and phenomenal Arabic styles food. You won't leave hungry that's for sure. Megan has waited on us twice now and basically runs the entire front of the restaurant. And did I say she does a fantastic job!! Never ran out of drinks or pita bread. Very good price for the quality of the food. Will be back and this is on my list of regular places now.

Great service. Very friendly, informative, and appreciative of our business. My husband had to hold his shawarma sandwich with two hands...it was huge, delicious, and so fresh! I loved my lentil soup, and even got the waiter to tell me how they make it! Can't wait to go back to try some falafel :)

I typically get takeout but every time I've been it has been very quiet and the sever very attentive. The atmosphere leaves a bit to be desired however the food is authentic, quick, reasonably priced and delicious. I would definitely recommend.

Excellent authentic Mediterranean cuisine. Very flavorful, family run and friendly wait staff. Extremely reasonable prices as well. Come in here for sure. Also vegetarian friendly!

  • Bernard S.

The food here is great!! The lamb and chicken kebobs are seasoned to perfection! The hummus was light, creamy and very tasty. The service was quick and prices are reasonable. I would definitely recommend this spot as it is one of the best Mediterranean spots I've ever experienced.

Love the food. I have traveled throughout the mideast and my wife is middle eastern. Never had a bad dish her. I like to pact that the food is served at, the price is right and the food is excellent both veg and non veg ( do not eat lamb or beef but my family members do).

I don't know but if you're anywhere near Charleston SC don't miss this place. I am so picky when it comes to food. And so reasonably priced.

People, please go here. The location is a little strange for a restaurant since its tucked into a grocery store center, but its so delicious. The shawarma sandwich is overflowing with meat and Jerusalem salad. The pita bread is so fluffy and sweet, it's great on its own, but even better with their hummus. The kabobs and the lentil soup should not be missed either. I don't understand why this place isn't packed to the brim every night. I have to give a shout out to the woman who is always my waitress (I wish I knew her name!) she's so sweet and very attentive without hovering. And she handles the whole restaurant herself, such a trooper!

On a Saturday evening, we went for dinner. There was a man playing a stringed instrument (? Balalaika). It was lovely. The lentil soup was good. I asked for my kibbe to be made into a sandwich and they acted like I was out of my mind. Kibbe is like a kofta and falafel hybrid, both of which are sandwiches here. Oh well, it may be an unspoken rule. The hummus is slightly bitter. Very authentic. Not bad, but an acquired taste. The pita is so soft and delicious. A great dinner.

Believe the hype, folks - this is sho nuff good Mediterranean food. Ali Baba is a far cry from the grossly Americanized "Greek" places that dump a few olives and feta on a piece of dry lamb and smother it in tsatziki to help it slide down your gullet. We're talking real stuff here: shawarma beef/lamb/chicken, lots of lentils & tahini, FANTASTIC FELAFEL, fresh authentic flavors. Enjoy their simple yet abundant combinations of goodies, or pace yourself with the smaller appetizer/side portions - either way you'll be treating yourself to some delicious international fare. My whole family (party of 9.5) showed up for Sunday lunch. Very easy to slide tables together to accommodate the crowd. Very attentive waitress kept drinks topped off. Very timely delivery of everybody's dishes simultaneously. Very positive feedback for each dish - lentil soup, felafel pita sandwich, shawarma plates with rice, tabouli, hummus, stewed lamb with rice. Very satisfied appetites! I'm rating 4 of 5 stars because I got the impression it could perhaps be a little cleaner - plastic table covers were a bit tacky on the forearms, and even if it's just due to the properties of the plastic itself, surface tackiness is a bit off-putting while I'm eating. But did it slow down my inhalation of felafel like I was a starving orphan in a workhouse? Nope. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

This is more true Mediterranean food then you fine at most places. Its not Americanized, and for that I love it!

So, a little store-front gem~!!! Love Mediterranean food and was blown away by this little place and its food~!! I've had falafel a gazillion times and they were always like golf balls~! How does this place get them soooo light and crispy~? The Baba Ganouj -- smoky and silky~! And the chicken you could cut with a fork~!!! How lucky were we to stumble upon this great place~!!! You can do no wrong here~!!!

My wife and I went to this place after realizing the restaurant we were looking for was closed because of the holiday. Lucky for us! The first thing my wife said as we drove around to park, was "This place doesn't look all that great." I thought the place looked fine, but we were planning on going to a "fine dining" restaurant. This definitely isn't "fine dining". It sits in a strip mall of sorts across from the tennis stadium. But the food was sooo good! She ordered a platter and I ordered the chicken shawarma. We wanted to eat all of it, but there was so much food. We took our leftovers home and it was just as good later. If we're ever in the area again, we'll be back to Ali Baba. We wish this place was closer to where we live.

Loved it. We just moved to the area and were very happy to stumble onto this place. The menu has lots of pictures to help those less familiar with the food. The kofta kabob was great, and flavored exactly as I'd expected it to be. My super-picky 4 year old ate chicken and rice. Great place to bring the family. Good food, friendly service. We will definitely be back.

Great place for Mediterranean food. The hummus and tabouli are great. Everything on the menu was good. The only downside is the service could have been better. However, the waitress was friendly, she forgot to bring napkins and didn't really check on us often enough. The decor is interesting but it is just a small strip mall restaurant. I personally loved the chicken and the lamb Shawarma was also really good. Also the portions are quite large, and the pita was warm and soft.

Casual. Small store front in a grocery store shopping center. Very good food. Went on a Saturday afternoon. There was a couple of tables on the sidewalk and a nice handful inside. Ordered a pita with all kinds of good stuff including falafel. Big! Food was fresh tasting yummy. Server was nice and quick. Food was swift. Ate half and had to get a to go box

Falafel, is FREAKING AMAZING!! I have had falafel sandwiches all over the country, hell, even overseas; it gets no better than this. Price, portion and service is outstanding! Everything is fresh as possible. I can not wait to try other dishes. As a side note, I noticed that others wrote awesome reviews on the food and experiences, but only leave four stars... what the hell does it take to get five stars? This place deserves 5 stars all day long. This style food is great, no matter where you're from. Its not just good for Charleston, its good for anywhere.

Best Mediterranean food in Charleston. The shawarma and hummus is absolutely amazing and the stuffed zucchini is unique and delicious and unlike anything I've had anywhere else. Service is always friendly and attentive. Outstanding!

The food is awesome here and some of the most authentic Mediterranean food in Charleston. I've gotten food to go here several times and have never had a bad meal. The prices are fair for proportion size and the service has been good. All dishes are prepared fresh at time of your order. One of my favs!

All good. Service was exceptional; the food, fantastic. The wife and I split the Ali Baba Platter for Two. This includes an opening course of tabouli salad, Jerusalem salad, hummus, baba ganoush, falafel and a couple of the fattest pita rounds I've ever seen ( yelp.com/biz_photos/Ulej… ). As a self-proclaimed tabouli expert, the Ali Baba version lacked enough lemon and was heavier on the bulgar than needed to push this to 5-stars. The falafel was excellent. The hummus was creamier than I'm accustomed to. I suspect some yogurt in the mix. If they offer the Almaza beer, get it and drink it with the falafel. What a great combo. The second course was a large plate of especially fragrant rice, covered with lots of Shawarma, flanked by two-6" Kofta rolls, two Kibbies, two rolled grape leaves and two falafels. The Kibby were filled with very tasty spiced meat. The Kofta was the best on the plate, spicy and moist. The shawarma was also very good. The grape leaves were just ok. The final course was a piece of Mamoul and a piece of Baklava. The Mamoul was nearly the finest dessert I've ever eaten. The date filling was sweet, but not overly so and as smooth as whip cream. The dough shell was soft and it was served hot. The Baklava phyllo dough was plentiful and quite crispy and the filling was very good. I am accustomed to more honey dripping from this hunk of heaven, making Ali's version slightly less than perfect. Pricing was reasonable, but could be less than our evening, given our beer and choice of the combo for two. On return, I will put a similar platter together for less. A great review of this Ali Baba restaurant and another, unrelated Ali Baba, on Daniel Island can be found in the City Paper. The decor is described very well. Check it out: charlestoncitypaper.com/…

I had almost giving up hope of finding good middle eastern food in Charleston. Someone had suggested Ali Baba in Mount Pleasant. I was skeptical going in but was pleasantly suprised. My boyfriend and I went in on Friday night and had the place to ourselves which he said he had planned :) I was absolutley thrilled when the food began to arrive perfect hummus and delightful falafel, the journey continued grape leaves, lentel soup, kafta, all bounding with flovors through each course. So glad to have found this little taste of the middle east here in Charleston. All for a very reasonable price and great service!

I had the shawarma and it was FANTASTIC! The rice is excellent. I also had the chicken, wow. Very flavorful. The owner, Ishmael was so friendly and the service made me feel very at home and happy to be dining there. Highly recommend this place.

Returned with some family and friends from out of town. We ate inside this time. Attractive decor is classy but comfortable. Our table ordered a couple Ali Baba combo plates (see previous review), the zucchini (stuffed with rice & beef, covered with light tomato sauce), and the kalaya (lamb & bell peppers in tomato sauce). Everything was very good -- we thought the lamb was especially flavorful. The Almaza beer should complement most everything on the menu. It's a refreshing pilsner; light but not lightweight.

After a long tiring day of site seeing we went to this place. We were nicely greeted by the hostess. exceptional service. nice decor. and pictorial menu shows what we are getting. I tried lentil soup and a alibaba platter. nicely cooked and aroma filled food arrives at our table within minutes. Top end kofta. And bread is delicious. I may go back to Charleston next year again. And if I am going back . I will go to this place to eat again.

I've been here twice now, and I love it. The first time I got a shawarma sandwich, and it was really good. This past time I got the shawarma plate and it was amazing! My wife got the lamb, and holy cow, I was jealous. Great atmosphere and the service was top notch and helpful. They filled me drink without asking. It's as good as it gets for Mediterranean in Mt. Pleasant.

Great service and great food. I'm not a seasoned veteran when it comes to Mediterranean food, but I know that I like everything on the menu that I have tried. I try to make it here for lunch at least once every couple weeks.

This is not my first experience with this cuisine but it will be my last experience with this particular restaurant. I was served two hush puppy sized meat balls that tasted over fried, under seasoned and gritty. The salads where equally tasteless. Picture parsley ground to a pulp on one side of the plate and a milky watery clumpy salad on the other. The hummus was more like a smear than a portion.

    (1)
  • Trey S.

Ate their for lunch. My guests and I shared the Hummus, Falafal, & Baba Ghanoush. It was served quickly and was delicious. I then had what would normally be called a Gyro (much more authentic name on their menu) which was also very good. Good mid eastern food and priced right.

The best food in charleston. Very friendly people. Our server was polite and patient. The menu is mainly middle eastern and they give pictures of food before you order. We ordered the veg appetizer platter, the lamb kabob, chicken kabobs, falafel, majadora and baba ganoush. The food was heavenly to say the least. For dessert we had baklava and Burma. Both were delicious. If I could, I would dine here every single day. Thanks Ali baba for serving charleston.
